The birth of a child in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago is God’s message of light to the world says the Bishop of St Asaph in his Christmas 2025 message.

The Rt Revd Gregory Cameron opens his message with a reminder of an event six years ago, when a group of young Thai footballers were trapped by floodwater in a cave. Their possibility of rescue came weeks later when glimpses of light appeared on the water and “with the appearance of that light they had hope”.

Bishop Gregory goes on to say: “The Christian message is that in the midst of the darkness of the world; in the midst of a world in which there are wars and injustices and famine and hurt, God sends us a light. The birth of the child of Bethlehem is God’s message of light to the world.”

It is this hope, he says, which gives people “the strength to go on; the courage to believe that with God’s help we can achieve the impossible and overcome the darkness in our own world.”
