Day 8

John the Baptist

The Gospel of Luke begins with the story of the birth of a close relative of Jesus, John the Baptist. John is understood in Christianity as ‘The Forerunner’, the one who prepares the way for the Messiah.

Jesus’ ministry is introduced in the Gospels with the preaching of John the Baptist. All the Gospels define him as a radical teacher and preacher, standing in the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament: he wears camel skin, eats locusts and wild honey and lives deep in the wilderness.

In legend, John becomes for Christians the bridge figure between the Old and New Testaments, as the one who prepares the people of Israel for the ministry of Jesus.

Sometimes we need others who can help us to see what God is saying to us and where he is calling us.  Let us thank God for all those who have helped our journey of faith.
