More than 20 vintage computers will be on display and available to play at a Church in Flintshire later this month.

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Drury near Hawarden is opening its doors to computer-lovers and nostalgia-seekers who want to play their favourite childhood computer games once again. The event on Saturday 13 June will be an opportunity to remember computers from the 80s, 90s and 2000s with a chance to try them out. Other computers dating from the early 1980s, like the BBC Micro and the ZX Spectrum, will be on display.

There will be a range of PCs dating back to 1982, featuring the infamous Intel 286 processor that established the bedrock for today’s modern PCs. Visitors will be able to experience Windows operating systems including Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98 and the more ‘modern’ Windows XP.

The organiser of the event is Dan Lay, a member of the church’s congregation. He said: “The Church of the Good Shepherd is a vibrant community church looking to ensure everyone in the local area knows they are welcome. We have a programme of different types of events to help people see that the church is an inclusive space for everyone.

“We hope our vintage computer event will appeal to people both locally and those from further afield who want to reconnect with their first computer or perhaps show their children the types of technology available in the recent past. It will be an opportunity to replay your childhood computer favourites!

“The church is a great space to hold all sorts of events. We recently held a Pet Service in Church to celebrate God’s creatures, and we had a Dementia Friendly service for those with Dementia, their family and carers. Once a month we hold a nature walk with refreshments offered at church afterwards.

“Church is about much more than what happens on Sundays!”

One of the key aspects of computing nostalgia is the video games these computers could run, particularly those enjoyed on home micros and at school. There will be popular titles, such as Chuckie Egg, Sonic the Hedgehog, Lemmings, Sim City, Commander Keen, Doom and much more available to play.

As well as all of this, there will be a chance to experience blazing-fast’ “dial-up” internet and explore the websites that were popular as the internet emerged in the UK at the turn of the century.

The event on Saturday 13 June starts at 10am and is open until 5pm. It is ticket only (£10 for adults and £5 for children) and they can be bought in advance via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vintage-computer-video-games-event-tickets-1987674820896 or subject to availability, on the door on the day! All money raised will be going to support the church. There will be refreshments to buy (cash-only) on the day.

Later in June, the church will be holding its next Nature Walk around Drury and Buckley. It is open to everyone and will take place on Wednesday 24 June at 6pm, starting at Good Shepherd Church. There will be refreshments in the church afterwards.

The Church of the Good Shepherd is called a “tin” church and was built in 1899. The wooden panelling inside the church originates from Sir William Gladstone’s library in Hawarden.

The Church of the Good Shepherd is part of the Rhos y Mynydd Mission Area, a collection of churches working together to meet the needs of their local community. It is one of 20 Mission Areas in the Diocese of St Asaph, part of the Church in Wales.
