New Priest to be licensed for Shotton and Garden City

A new priest will be welcomed and licensed to the Borderlands Mission Area on Sunday (30 July).

The Revd George Bearwood will be licensed as a Priest-in-Charge in Borderlands Mission Area at a service conducted by the Bishop of St Asaph at St Ethelwold’s Church, Shotton at 3pm.

George grew up in the Black Country in the Midlands, before heading to Edinburgh to study Fine Art. After college, George pursued a worldwide career in the media, firstly as a musician before working in television and radio. He came to Wales to study Theology and decided to pursue his vocation in the Church in Wales.

Ordained in 2020, George will be rooted in the communities of Shotton and Garden City in the Borderlands Mission Area.  George said: “I am very much looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that will come from being part of such a vibrant and diverse community.”

George is married to the Revd Alex Mayes, the priest for Connah’s Quay. He is a presenter on Total Rock Radio with a weekly Christian rock show and has a passion for art, loud music, and horror movies which he regularly makes use of in his ministry.

In appointing George to this new ministry, the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron Gregory said: “George brings a unique background to his ministry and is an unusual candidate for priesthood.  Nevertheless, his deep faith and gentle pastoral care are much loved and appreciated.”
