The Bishop of St Asaph has licensed a new priest for the communities of Old Colwyn, Llanelian and Betws yn Rhos.
The Revd Gareth Erlandson is beginning his ministry after a service on 9 November in St John’s Church, Old Colwyn, led by the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron.
Gareth said: “I am excited to be following God’s call to serve three diverse communities off the North Wales Coast and look forward to sharing the love of Jesus with church members and the wider community alike.”
Gareth was born and raised in villages just south of Wrexham, going on to work as a secondary school music teacher for ten years prior to ordination. He was ordained in St Asaph Cathedral in 2019 and has been serving his curacy in the Hope Group of churches in Borderlands Mission Area.
Gareth is married to Shavonne. They have two children and together enjoy cinema trips, walking Elsa their cockapoo, and bike rides.
Gareth and Shavonne share an interest in youth and children’s ministry and Gareth is keen on exploring the Church’s role in safeguarding the environment, as well as creating communities around those who are poor, lonely and vulnerable. Gareth loves singing and is a member of Johns’ Boys Male Chorus, which won the prestigious Choir of the World Award at the 2019 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddford. Gareth is passionate about the use of music and the arts in worship.
The Bishop of St Asaph, Gregory Cameron, said: “I am delighted to license Gareth to a new role in Old Colwyn. New to ordained ministry, Gareth brings enthusiasm and passion to his work. We welcome him and his young family to the north coast”.
Old Colwyn, Llanelian and Betws yn Rhos are part of the Aled Mission Area in the Archdeaconry of St Asaph in the Diocese of St Asaph.
