George, who is a priest in the Borderlands Mission Area, said: “Horror movies by their very nature take on theological concepts because every horror movie is the battle between good and evil. Predominately in horror movies, good always wins in the end.

“Our first film, The Unholy, will encourage us to think about miracles in society today. Do we believe that miracles happen and what do they look like? There’s a sub-text throughout the film, about how do you know what’s true. This ties in with social media, so there’s plenty to talk about.

“The Bible is full of stories of horror, and we preach on it and talk about it every Sunday. In the Old Testament, there’s rapes, beheadings, ghostly hands writing on walls, armies on skeletons, there are floods which drown everyone. In the New Testament, the horror imagery in the Book of Revelation is spectacular. Most of the characters and tropes that we recognise as being modern horror movies have some Biblical basis. We as Christians believe that Jesus’ blood helps us to have eternal life. What does Dracula do? He drinks blood so he can live forever.”

The film club will meet on the last Friday of every month at 6.30pm. Free popcorn will be available to those coming along. It’s open to anyone over 18 years old due to the nature of the content of some of the film.

George added: “Horror films are particularly popular with people under 35 but the club is open to anyone. I’m hoping we get people from 19 to 90 years old coming along.”

Before being ordained in 2020, George had a career in the music, radio, TV and film industries. Until recently he presented a show on Total Rock Radio called Church of Noise, which is the only Christian Rock programme on the station.

St Ethelwold’s Church in Shotton is part of the Borderlands Mission Area, one of the 19 groups of churches in the Diocese of St Asaph, which is part of the Church in Wales.
