Funding for Sustainable Church Flowers

Churches are being encouraged to explore grant opportunities to develop Sustainable Flower Arrangements. It follows the Royal Maundy Service in St Asaph Cathedral in April, attended by Their Majesties The King and Queen, both of whom support Sustainable Flowers in Churches. All the flowers on display during the service were arranged without the use of plastics or floral foam (oasis) and were locally sourced.

There is a list of possible grants below. These could be used to create a flower-growing area in your churchyard (always check if Faculty is required) suitable for use in your services.

  1. Benefact Trust: Community Impact Grant (£10,000–£54,000)

  • Supports churches, cathedrals, dioceses and Christian charities delivering projects that make a positive difference in their communities.

Funding priorities

  • Project delivery costs.
  • Staff salaries and volunteer coordination roles.
  • Programme running costs.
  • Essential core costs linked to delivering the project

  1. Community Lottery Fund: Awards for All (£300 to £20,000)
  • Supports churches, cathedrals, dioceses and Christian charities delivering projects that make a positive difference in their communities.

Funding Priorities

  • Bring people together and strengthen community relationships.
  • Improve places and spaces that matter to local communities.
  • Help people develop skills, confidence and opportunities.
  • Support communities facing challenges, including the cost-of-living crisis.

National Lottery Awards for All Wales | The National Lottery Community Fund

  1. Garfield Weston Foundation (£1,000 Minimum)
  • The Foundation supports charities across the UK that make a positive difference in their communities. It funds a broad range of causes, including community, faith, welfare, youth, education, health, environment, arts and heritage.

Funding Priorities

Whilst generally flexible, they definitely support applications that prioritise the following…

  • Improving a community space.
  • Increasing community participation and volunteering.
  • Supporting wellbeing and social connections.
  • Enhancing the church’s role as a community asset.

  1. Joseph Rank Foundation  ( £1,000 to £250,000)
  • The Joseph Rank Trust is an independent Christian grant-maker that supports projects which advance the Christian faith and help meet the practical, educational and spiritual needs of communities. It works with all Christian denominations across the UK.

Funding Priorities

  • Projects that demonstrate a clear Christian mission.
  • Practical support for people and communities.
  • Outreach activities that engage those beyond the congregation.
  • Church buildings being used more effectively for community benefit

Always remember when applying for grants:

  • Funding may be easier to secure if the application can demonstrate wider community benefits, such as bringing people together, supporting volunteers, improving wellbeing, or reducing social isolation.
  • Applicants should ensure they meet the funders’ eligibility requirements and consider any permissions, responsibilities, or restrictions relating to the church grounds before applying.
