Jesse Tree

Advent and Christmas

This is an entry into Bishop Gregory’s Christmas Card Competition and was on the cover of Teulu Asaph.

In 2024, the theme of Bishop Gregory’s Christmas Card Competition was Jesus, Hope to the World and our church schools were encouraged to create a Jesse Tree.

The Jesse Tree traces God’s Promise through the Old Testament to the birth of Jesus, Hope of the World. It helps people learn how Jesus’ birth was the fulfilment of God’s Promise. You could consider it as the original “Advent Calendar” with a different branch added to the Jesse Tree every day during Advent!

Jesse was the father of David, the shepherd boy who became King David. Jesse lived in Bethlehem and was the grandson of Ruth and Boaz.

The prophet Isaiah wrote: “A shoot shall come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” (Isaiah 11:1)

We created a virtual Jesse Tree which is being shared on our social media platforms throughout Advent. You can find the daily symbols for the Jesse Tree below. The list of readings to accompany the symbols is here.

The quotes in English are from the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition. You can read it at https://www.biblegateway.com/ The quotes in Welsh are from the BCND version and you can read it at https://www.bible.com/cy/bible/394/GEN.1.BCND
