Our Link Diocese
St Asaph is linked with the Diocese of South West Tanganyika in Tanzania. Since the link was established in 2009, numerous visits from individuals and groups have taken place.
Farming is the way of life for a substantial proportion of the population, many of whom are largely self-sufficient. They eat what they grow; maize, beans, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, avocados, watermelons, oranges and yams so it is a very healthy diet. The farmers also keep cows, pigs and chickens to provide meat for special occasions. The main cash crop is maize.
It’s not as hot as you might imagine as most of the diocese is between 3,800 feet and 6,000 feet above sea level. Temperatures range from 15° to 25° for most of the year and there is plenty of rain. It’s much hotter on the shores of Lake Nyasa.
In 2023, there were three separate trips to Tanzania by groups/individuals from across the diocese – Offa Mission Area, Valle Crucis Mission Area and Dyffryn Clwyd Mission Area. Ways you can help some of the world’s poorest people in our link diocese of South West Tanganyika
1. Make your church/ mission area a partner with a parish in SW Tanganyika. Share prayer, bible study and support small projects which have an enormous effect.
2. Have a fund raiser to help raise money for essential equipment at Milo Hospital.
3. Buy a water bottle to help Amani raise funds to improve their water supply. Email Canon Trish Owens for information.
4. Help the planet and SW Tanganyika by helping the forestry project in Mafinga. £200 will buy 5 hectares of trees in a church owned forestry project. Trees in in Tanzania grow 4 times as fast as in the UK so this project helps the planet as well.
5. Help SW Tanganyika train its priests. Most priests in DSWT only have a very rudimentary education over 2 years with very few books. Help Bishop Matthew improve priest education by sponsoring a priest or buying a book.
