Marking Homeless Sunday

More than a hundred people joined the MP for Wrexham, the town’s Mayor and the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner to mark Homeless Sunday at St Giles’ Church in Wrexham (13 October).

The service led by the Vicar of Wrexham, the Revd Dr Jason Bray, included a poem from Evrah Rose, especially commissioned for Homeless Sunday by Housing Justice Cymru. Evrah, a poet based in Wrexham who has just had her first book published, shared the poem via video.

The names of 12 people who’d died while being homeless on the streets of Wrexham over the last year were read out during the service.

The congregation included people who had formally been homeless and were helped to get their life back on track by the Night Shelter Scheme run across Wrexham last winter.

Handmade mini-banners featuring reflections on homelessness have been hung in the church-yard, encouraging passers-by to remember those who are homeless.

Churches across the town will open once again this winter and volunteers are being trained to provide a warm welcome, a hot meal and a safe place for up to 10 guests once again.
