New show for DJ vicar in Deeside

The Vicar of Connah’s Quay has launched a new radio show.

The Revd Alex Mayes, along with her husband, trainee Vicar, George Bearwood are the voices of Urban Hymns which is broadcast on the community station, Radio Deeside, everyone Monday morning, repeated the following Sunday.

The programme plays pop and alternative music linked with faith, includes a thought for the week and advertises local events.  A slot called “Cheese Platter” gives listeners the chance to vote on two cheesy faith-based hits of the past.

Revd Alex said: “We’re so excited to have launched Urban Hymns. It’s a fun and lively, loosely faith-based show. While the programme title says hymns, this is not about hymns in the traditional church sense of the word.  We play all sorts of pop and alternative music tracks which reflect ideas of faith.

“Both George and I love our music and growing up in the 70s and 80s we had divergent musical tastes.  We’ll be bantering about our musical loves, what going on in the local community and introducing some interesting guests.

“So far on the play list, we’ve included One Republic, Lauren Hill, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Jam, Twenty-one Pilots, Ed Sheeran, Pink and much more.  We also take requests, so anything could be included.”

Revd Alex is the Vicar of St Mark’s Church and St David’s Church in Connah’s Quay.  The congregations are part of the Borderlands Mission Area, a collection of 19 churches across Flintshire in the Diocese of St Asaph.  The Carol Service on 15 December at St Mark’s will be recorded and broadcast as the main act of worship on Radio Deeside on Christmas Day.

George Bearwood is training to be a vicar and is expected to be ordained at St Asaph Cathedral, as a deacon next year.  He has his own show on Radio Deeside, Tiki Hut, which is live every Monday from 10am-12noon.  Tiki Hut plays rockabilly, punk and Christian ska.

Urban Hymns is broadcast live on Radio Deeside at 1pm-3pm on Mondays and repeated between 7am-9am on Sunday mornings.  Radio Deeside is a community radio station, broadcasting to over 3,000 people across Deeside and beyond.   You can join them on Facebook and on the digital radio app, TuneIN.
